Ancestors of the Travis family are
known to have been extensive land owners in Virginia during the pre Civil War
years. The end of the war found them
with worthless Confederate money and no slaves to ten their plantations.
Two sons of this family, John Stewart
Travis and Joseph Hudson Travis, established homes in the Keller area.
Joseph Hudson Travis was born on
April 23, 1886. He was married to Ora
Ophelia Henderson in about 1906. They
were the parents of four children:
1)
Herbert Beeding Travis, born January 23, 1908.
2)
Millie Louellen Travis, born November 20, 1909.
3)
Walter B. Travis, born February 19, 1911.
4)
Joseph A. Travis, born September 1, 1913.
All the children were born in Texas. Joseph and Ophelia Travis were farmers and as
of 1930, according to the census, owned their farm. They lived in the Keller area until their
deaths. Ophelia Travis died October 11,
1918 and Joseph Hudson Travis died October 25, 1951. Both are buried in Bourland Cemetery.
