Keller
– Miscellaneous Information
Keller Water Works Company formed
in 1906 by William Chainey, Jeff Lavy, Tine Allen, and O.L. Sweet. The first well was drilled by Mr. Allen,
father of Gene Allen. There was only one
wooden tank on a 20 foot tower. A two
inch pipeline ran down Main Street,
the lines running onto private property were connected onto this two inch main
pipe.
The school building which was
located on the corner of Elm and Olive (?) was moved to the water works and was
used there until the water works burned in 1936.
Mr. Knight ran a saloon, located
between Mt. Gilead and Double Springs, on the Shehea Place (Dutch
Cook); it was famous for its “home-made wine”.
Jim McCarty put in a saloon in the
south end of the old wooden building that stood on the corner of Main and Vine (southeast). It only lasted 90 days, just long enough for
the people of Keller to call an election and vote it out.
The Post Office was transferred
from Double Springs in 1888 and was located in the wooden building on the
northwest corner of Main and Vine
Streets. It was run for a time by J.E.
Pierson, later Bully Highsmith was postmaster and his daughter, Nora, ran the
office.
John Prewett Grocery was located on
the corner of Vine and Main.
The first Livery Stable was in the
block where the Knox Garage is located and was owned and run by Ben Warren,
father of Mr. Tom Warren.
